Chapter 7 — WHAT I HAD BELIEVED

By Mavenlus Desk · 2026-08-29

This is the chapter I did not want to write and it is the one I owe.

Eight months.

That is the answer. That is how long it had been going on before a stranger's face in a restaurant made me see it.

I did not miss a hidden thing. That is the lie I would like to tell and it is not available to me.

I missed an obvious thing, repeatedly, because each individual time there was an explanation, and the explanations were good, and I wanted them.

Here is the list. I made it that night on the floor, on the back of a pharmacy delivery manifest, and I have it still.

**February.** Thomas came down to breakfast with a mark on his upper arm, four small ovals. He said he fell on the stairs. Daniel said, from behind the paper, "He was messing around on the landing."

**March.** He stopped having Owen and Rafe over. When I asked why he said they were annoying now. I said okay.

**Also March.** A split lip. Basketball at recess.

**April.** He started closing his door. He is twelve. Twelve-year-olds close doors. I read an article about it.

**May.** I raised my arm to get a bowl off the top shelf and my son moved. Not a lot. A half step back, and his shoulders came up. And I said, "What?" and he said, "Nothing," and I got the bowl down and made dinner.

I have thought about the bowl about four thousand times.

**June.** A bruise on his back that I saw when he came out of the pool. He said he went into the ladder. Daniel said, that evening, unprompted, in the car, "He's got no spatial awareness, that kid," and he said it fondly, and I laughed.

*Unprompted.*

That is the one that tells you. I had not asked. He answered a question I had not asked.

**July.** He stopped eating dinner with us twice a week. Homework.

**September.** A new school year. His form tutor emailed me the word "withdrawn" and I made an appointment and then Daniel said he would go instead because I had the store inventory, and he went, and he came back and said it was fine, she just wanted to say Thomas is quiet.

I never spoke to that teacher.

I could have. It was one phone call. I have made ten thousand phone calls in my life about drug wholesalers and insurance reimbursements and I did not make one phone call to the woman who wrote me the word *withdrawn*.

**October.** A boy with a bruised face in a restaurant, and my son standing up.

Every single item on that list has an innocent explanation and every single innocent explanation was supplied to me, quickly, by the same person, and I took all of them, because the man supplying them was the man I had chosen, and to reject one explanation was to reopen all of them at once.

Fear does not make you look away.

*Convenience* makes you look away. Fear is what keeps you from looking back.
