Chapter 10 — THE NAME

I went back to Sheridan on the fourteenth of June with a folder.

I did not put the folder on the table.

I said, "You bought it."

She said, "Yes."

Just like that.

Eighty-one years old, in a chair by four feet of lake, and no fight in her at all, and I realised she had been waiting since March and possibly since 1997.

I said, "Why."

And my mother said, "Because you were nineteen and you were embarrassed of me."

I started to say something and she put her hand up.

She said, "You were at that school with those girls and you came home at Christmas and you said the word Portage Park like it was a thing you had to explain. And you asked me that year where we were from. Not where I was born. Where we were *from*. And I didn't have an answer that was any use to you."

She said, "I went to that auction for a bracelet. There was a bracelet in the catalogue I could have got for sixty dollars."

She said, "And I saw a ring with a name inside it and I thought: that is a name that opens a door. And nobody wanted it. It had been sitting in the state's hands for two years and nobody in the world had come for it, and I thought, that means nobody is using it."

I said, "There was a woman using it."

She said, "I know that now."

I said, "She was in Kelvyn for twelve years."

My mother put her hand over her mouth and held it there for a long moment and then took it away and said, "I want you to hear the whole thing before you decide what I am."

She said, "I gave it to you in May and I told you it was your grandmother's and I watched your face and I knew inside about four seconds that I had done something I could not take back. Because you didn't check. You were nineteen and clever and you didn't check, and I understood right then that you wanted it as much as I wanted it for you."

She said, "And every year after that it got more expensive to say."

Then she said the sentence that I will be carrying for the rest of my life.

She said, "By the time you put it on the door of a building I would have had to take the building down."
