Chapter 11 — EVERYTHING WITH MY NAME ON IT

By Mavenlus Desk · 2026-08-29

Let me lay out what a name turns into over twenty-nine years, because I had never counted it up.

A law firm, founded 2003, forty-one people, on the letterhead and the lease and the trust account.

A registered charity with sixty-one million dollars raised since 2009 and a scholarship programme with two hundred and eighty living recipients who put that word on their CVs.

A daughter, twenty-four, who has that surname on her passport, her degree, her lease and her medical records, and who found out about all of this over a coffee in Andersonville and said, "So what's my actual name?" and then cried in a way I had not seen since she was small.

A husband who took it in 2001.

A dedication on a wall in a hospital atrium.

I sat with a legal pad and I made the list and it ran to two pages, and then I did what I always tell clients to do, which is to sort the list into what is a lie and what is merely built on one.

The lie is small.

It is one sentence said in a kitchen in 1997, and one form at the Daley Center that cost thirty-one dollars, and one word I never checked because checking would have cost me a story about myself.

Everything else — the firm, the money, the two hundred and eighty scholarships, my daughter — is real.

That is not a comfort.

It is the opposite of a comfort.

If the building were fraudulent I could take it down.

You cannot take down two hundred and eighty scholarships to be honest about a ring.

What I could do was much smaller and much harder, and it took me until the end of July to work out what it was, and it is not an apology, because Elena Rosewood died in 2016 and you cannot apologise to a woman who is not there.
