Chapter 8 — THE ADDRESS ON THE NOTICE
1400 North Kelvyn Road.
It is the Kelvyn State Psychiatric Center.
Elena Rosewood was admitted on the ninth of July 1984 at the age of thirty-three, seventeen days after the last time she opened box 219, and she was discharged on the twelfth of November 1996.
Twelve years.
I got this from Tess, eventually, and not from a record, because those records are not mine to pull and I did not try.
Elena had a psychotic break in the summer of 1984 after her mother died.
Her mother is the one who wore the second ring, ring number two, and she died in June of that year, and Elena took her ring off her hand at the funeral home and put it on her own and then went to pieces so completely that she did not come back for twelve years.
The address of record on box 219 was updated once, in 1985, by a hospital social worker who was doing something kind and administratively correct, so that Elena's mail would follow her.
And so for eleven years the State of Illinois and a bank on North Milwaukee wrote, four separate times, in envelopes with windows, to a woman on a locked ward, to tell her that she was about to lose everything in a metal drawer.
Somebody signed for those letters.
There is no reason to believe she ever saw one.
She came out on the twelfth of November 1996 to a half-way placement in Logan Square, with a state disability cheque and a paper bag, and she went to the bank in January.
Tess has the letter the bank wrote her.
It is a good letter, actually — a branch manager trying to explain escheatment to a woman standing at his counter — and it says that the contents of box 219 are held by the Office of the Illinois State Treasurer and gives her a telephone number and tells her that she may claim her property at any time at no charge.
The letter is dated the twenty-ninth of January 1997.
The auction was the eighteenth of February 1997.
Three weeks.
She missed her mother's ring by three weeks, and she missed it because it took her twelve years to get out and eleven more weeks to get to a counter, and there is nobody to be angry at in the entire chain, and I have never in my life wanted so badly for there to be somebody.
