Chapter 17 — SATURDAY

Twelve words.

I sat on the floor of my own hall with my back against the radiator and I read those twelve words maybe two hundred times.

*Put her outside for a bit if you have to.*

I want to be careful here, because I have had a year to be careless about it and I have not been.

My wife did not intend what happened. She was in a hotel room at eleven forty-one at night at the end of a fourteen-hour day and her sister was asking her to solve something from three hundred miles away, and she typed a sentence to make the phone stop.

That is all it was. It was a sentence to make a phone stop.

But Sarah did not read it as a sentence to make a phone stop. Sarah read it as the only instruction she had received in six days from anybody in that family.

And on Friday afternoon she carried it out.

And this is the part that I have never got past. Not the balcony. Not the bucket. Not the two hours.

There were four people who could have stopped this, and three of them were adults who loved that child, and each of us did one small thing.

Claire typed twelve words to make a phone stop.

Sarah opened a door and put a five-year-old on the other side of it for twenty minutes.

I put a keyhole where a thumb-turn should be, and then five months later I moved a key eighteen inches because a boy kept playing with it.

The fourth person is Sophia, who is five, and who did nothing at all except lie down on the third slab from the door and face the glass and wait for somebody to come home.
