Chapter 6 — WHAT BEV WROTE

By Mavenlus Desk · 2026-08-29

At nine forty they moved Sophia to Room 212 and I sat with her.

At ten past ten Bev Kessler came in and stood at the foot of the bed with her hands in the pockets of her scrubs and said the thing she had come to say.

Bev: Mark, I've filed.

Mark: Filed what.

Bev: A report. Hypothermic five-year-old, wet clothes, no coat, delayed presentation on a six-day respiratory illness. I'm a mandated reporter. I had it in before you finished parking.

Mark: Good. Good — that's what I want. She needs to be —

Bev: Mark.

Mark: What.

Bev: The report is not about your sister-in-law.

I did not understand her.

Bev: The report is about a household. The child lives in it. You live in it. Her mother lives in it. Everybody in that house is in the report, and the investigator gets to decide who did what.

I remember looking at the heart monitor for a while.

Mark: I brought her in.

Bev: You did. Four minutes after you found her, which is why nobody is going to take her from you. But she was sick for six days and nobody in that house took her to a doctor, and that is a sentence somebody is going to read out loud to you, and I would rather you hear it first from me sitting down.
